Giant Wood Wasp / Horntail

Urocerus gigas

28-52mm (including ovipositor of female)
Late April to October
A very large and impressive insect which resembles a wasp or hornet, but is completely harmless. The long ovipositor on the abdomen of the female is used to drill into dead or sickly pine trunks where eggs are laid and the larvae develop feeding on the wood for around three years.

The egg laying procedure can take a long time in which the female is pinned to the tree, making it a target for predators. The ovipositors of predated females can be found protruding from the wood.

Males are smaller and lack the ovipositor, and the yellow of the abdomen is often more orange-red or brown. The wings of both species are clouded slightly yellow-brown and in flight the insect could easily be mistaken for a hornet.

Illustration - pigment liner, markers & acrylic, A4.

Legs very bright in female and banded in male, entire thorax covered in fine black hair.
Fairly widespread in areas of suitable pine or mixed woodland, including plantations, although most often encountered in Scotland and Wales and never common. Also seen around sawmills and even emerging from the timber of new houses.

I have only ever seen one specimen, for a second, as it buzzed past my head in mixed woodland, if you know any good sights to see these beasts let me know!
Specimen in the photo was collected by someone in Scotland - found dead in a bucket of water.

    1. That sounds great! They are completely harmless so nothing to be afraid of, although seeing three inside the house at the same time might indicate they emerged from internal Timber structures? They have been known to emerge from building timbers as they can take several years to develop as a grub, the eggs are most often laid when the wood is fresh.

If you have any specimens I would be very interested.

  7. Hello, my name is John Mooney and carpenter who keeps bees! I have kept bees for over 5 years and am aware of the danger of the asian hornet, so when a huge insect flew into my garage / workshop I took a broom to it! I killed it by my bee hive - then had a look on the internet to identify it. It is a horntail! I have it in a match box- so can send it to you if you want!

Amazing insect and one I've never come across. We live just outside Glasgow in Scotland. No pine trees near by! Have let her go so she can hopefully find a mate. Didn't get any photos, sorry.

  9. Hi Carim

I've read your article on the Horntail with much interest. This is due to the fact we had one visit our garden! As I imagine with other people, we thought it was a type of Hornet. Suspect it may have travelled in the new fencing we have just put in. I have picture so let me know where I can post it up as struggling to add it here, no doubt due to my technical deficiency...

  13. Saw one a female crawling around the outside of my office window this afternoon while having my lunch. Very impressive creature so I decided to look it up and it's definitely a Giant Wood Wasp didn't get any pics though sorry. My office is just off the northern end of runway 1 at Manchester Intl Airport in Wythenshawe and there is plenty of wild, mature woodland about so I'm not surprised to see it in the area but very surprised to see one so late in the year, particularly as we had a hard frost this morning. It was on the sunny side of the building so it may have been warming up in the autumn sunshine!

  21. After a heavy rainstorm, I found one on the path in my back garden yesterday. It looked dead, and being a keen photographer I thought it might make an interesting subject so I carefully picked it up & brought it indoors, only to discover that it was still alive - barely. I've googled to find out what it is, and thanks to this website now know it's a female Giant Wood Wasp.

I'm in west Suffolk, only lived here for 4 years but never seen one before today, dead or alive. I recently had some wooden raised beds delivered, wondering if that might be where she's come from.

I'd be happy to send it to you if you're interested, or send photos.

  31. Saw one yesterday, (10 August 2017) county Antrim, Northern Ireland. Have a lot of photographs. Thought at first it was dead but eventually it flew off. If they have just emerged from a cocoon, they may be like butterflies and need to rest for a while to send fluid through the wings to enable them to fly.

  32. I have just seen one today in a rural location near Coylton in South Ayrshire. She flew past my windows and I was aware of the size, the heavy flight and bright ginger colour at the back end. She landed on my paving area and I got the following close photo before searching for an ID. There is plenty of woodland around us so hopefully she will be searching for a suitable tree.

  41. Hi,
I had one in my garden a couple of months back. My cat took an interest in it and chased it into my house. Now I'm not proud of what happened next but I sprayed it with insect killer. I didn't realize that they were so rare as it's taken me ages to identify it. I only sprayed it as I have a horrible fear of stinging insects due to my severe sting allergy.
Such a shame I killed it. I did keep it for a while but chucked it when my neighbor identified it.

  43. The last couple of days a MASSIVE wasp like creature has been flying round my back garden. It has a loud hum, like a bi-plane and must be at least 2-2.5 inches long. Not like anything I've ever seen in the UK before but not surprising as we've had a glorious few weeks of sunshine and high temperatures. It landed very briefly for me to see its black and yellow/orange and has a thorax like a wasp and not bee. It's just flown irratically up and down the garden with 2 very over excited dogs chasing it. I live in Redhill, Surrey. I doubt very much I'll be able to catch it for a closer look as my dogs would very possibly beat me to it! I have a 12ft pool in my garden and, as its been at good 4 weeks since there's been any rainfall, could it possibly be attracted to the water?

    ReplyDelete

We all ran screaming thinking it was a hornet, my three year old son was hysterical. She landed on me as I scrambled out and took off from my back once outside. Then she doubled back for another check over the wood before deciding against it and heading off to the trees just as my wife headed in to get a camera...
